7 unlocks, 1 number, $0 to the IRS

Chart of what an LLC EIN unlocks: a US bank account, an SSN kept off Form W-9, a business credit file, payroll forms 941 and 940, and elections on Forms 8832 and 2553

What Are the Benefits of an EIN for an LLC?

The benefits of an EIN for an LLC are 7: a US business bank account, an SSN kept off Form W-9, a business credit file, payroll readiness, payment processors, 2 tax elections, and annual federal filings. The IRS charges $0.

The account you cannot open without it

Mercury, Wise, Relay, Chase and Bank of America each verify the 9-digit EIN against the CP-575 letter before an LLC account opens.

EIN for an LLC Bank Account
One number replaces your SSN

A single-member LLC without an EIN writes the owner’s SSN on line 5 of every Form W-9. One EIN ends that, permanently.

EIN for a Single-Member LLC
A credit file of its own

Business bureaus open a file under the LLC name and its EIN. Trade lines report there instead of against the owner alone.

Hiring, whenever you are ready

Forms 941, 940 and W-2 all carry the EIN. The number is in place before the first hire, at no extra cost in year 2 or after.

EIN for a Multi-Member LLC
Read this before paying anyone, including us

Have an SSN? Go to irs.gov. The online assistant is free, and it issues the EIN in 15 minutes in a single session. Every benefit on this page arrives at $0. Paying anyone $97 for that is money wasted.

No SSN? The online tool stops you at the validation screen. Take the fax route on your own at $0, using 855-641-6935 or 855-215-1627, or we file it for $97, faxed within 7 business days in writing, or $127 filed within 24 hours with the IRS call included.

The EIN is priced on its own. If your LLC already exists, that is the whole invoice, and we will tell you to skip the formation add-on rather than sell it to you.

Which Accounts Require an LLC EIN?

Every US business bank account, every business payment processor, and every business card requires the LLC EIN. Each one verifies the 9-digit number against the legal name on the CP-575 letter before approval.

This is the benefit LLC owners feel first, and the mechanism behind it is a matching test. The institution takes 2 fields from you, the EIN and the legal name, and matches them against IRS records. A single character of difference in the name fails that match, which is why the CP-575 letter matters more than the number itself. The letter prints the LLC name exactly as the state approved it.

PayPal business accountYesEIN plus the exact legal namePersonal account only

Merchant processingYesCP-575 and the bank accountNo merchant ID issued

The IRS issues 1 CP-575 per EIN and never reprints it. Store a copy the day it arrives, and read the cp 575 for llc page before your first bank appointment.

The 9-digit EIN prints in the format XX-XXXXXXX. Banks read the 2 leading digits as the prefix the IRS campus assigned, and neither the prefix nor the number changes for the life of the LLC. That permanence is why 1 filing covers an account opened this month and an account opened 8 years from now. If you are still pinning down what the number is before weighing what it buys, start with what an EIN number is for an LLC and the difference between it and the other 9-digit federal IDs on TIN vs EIN.

How Does an EIN Keep an LLC Owner’s SSN Private?

Form W-9 asks for 1 taxpayer identification number. An LLC with an EIN enters the 9-digit business number there. An LLC without one enters the owner’s Social Security Number, on every W-9 it signs.

Trace the paperwork and the benefit becomes concrete. A client that pays a US business asks for Form W-9 before it pays. Line 1 takes the legal name, line 2 takes the business name, line 3 marks the federal tax classification, and the identification box takes either an SSN or an EIN. A single-member LLC treated as a disregarded entity is permitted to use either one. The choice decides whether the owner’s personal number sits in the accounts-payable file of every company that hires the LLC.

The 1099 that follows in January carries whichever number the W-9 supplied. So does the payer’s internal vendor record, and so does any file that leaks from it. The IRS also applies backup withholding at 24% when the name and number on a W-9 fail to match its records, which makes accuracy on that form a cash-flow question, not only a privacy one.

1 number, unlimited forms. The same EIN serves every W-9 the LLC ever signs. It never renews, and it costs $0 in year 2 and after.

The owner’s SSN stops circulating. Clients, marketplaces and merchant processors hold the EIN in their vendor files instead of a personal identifier.

The name match still governs. Line 1 of Form W-9 has to carry the LLC name exactly as the IRS holds it, or backup withholding at 24% starts.

Privacy is not anonymity. The IRS still records the responsible party on Form SS-4 line 7a. The EIN shields the number from third parties, not from the IRS.

Can an LLC Build Business Credit With an EIN?

Yes. Business credit bureaus open a file keyed to the LLC name and its EIN. Trade lines, net terms and business cards report to that file rather than to the owner’s personal credit report.

The mechanism is a matching key, the same idea as the bank test. A supplier reporting a paid invoice needs an identifier that survives a change of address, a change of officer, and a change of state. The EIN is that identifier, because the IRS assigns it once and keeps it for the lifetime of the LLC. A personal SSN cannot do that job without merging the company’s record into the owner’s.

Credit stepWhat the EIN doesOrder
Open the business fileSupplies the permanent key the bureau files underStep 1
Open the bank accountProduces the statements a lender readsStep 2
Take net-30 supplier termsLets the supplier report the trade line to the LLCStep 3
Apply for a business cardTies the account to the LLC rather than the ownerStep 4
Apply for a business loanIdentifies the borrower on the application and the returnsStep 5

Step 1 fails without the number, so the other 4 steps never start. That is the honest shape of this benefit: the EIN is a precondition, not a score. Nothing about holding an EIN raises a credit rating on its own, and lenders read filed returns, bank statements and paid invoices. The EIN is what lets those 3 records point at the company instead of at you.

What Does an EIN Unlock for LLC Payroll?

Payroll runs on the EIN. Form 941 each quarter, Form 940 each year, and every Form W-2 carry the employer identification number. An LLC hires no US employee before the IRS assigns it.

Form SS-4 asks about this in advance. Line 13 takes the highest number of employees expected in the next 12 months, and line 15 takes the first date wages were paid. An LLC with no payroll enters 0 on line 13 and leaves line 15 blank, which changes nothing about the EIN it receives. The number is the same number a payroll provider needs 3 years later.

Payroll formWhat it reportsFrequencyCarries the EIN

Form 940Federal unemployment taxOnce a yearYes
Form 944The same tax as 941 for the smallest employersOnce a yearYes

Form W-3The transmittal that totals the W-2 formsOnce a yearYes

Source: IRS instructions for Forms 941, 940, 944 and W-2, verified July 2026.

Form SS-4 line 14 offers the Form 944 election, which the IRS opens to employers whose annual employment tax runs $1,000 or less. That single checkbox turns 4 quarterly filings into 1 annual filing. It is the kind of field a rushed application skips, and it is one of the reasons the LLC EIN application deserves a second reader.

Which LLC Tax Elections Require an EIN?

Two. Form 8832 elects corporate treatment, and Form 2553 elects S corporation treatment. Both forms require the EIN in the identification block, so neither election is possible without the number.

Default classification arrives with the EIN itself, set by Form SS-4 lines 8a, 8b and 9a. A single-member LLC defaults to a disregarded entity. A multi-member LLC defaults to a partnership that files Form 1065 every year. Those defaults hold until the LLC files 1 of the 2 election forms, and the EIN is the field that ties the election to the right company.

LLC electing corporate statusCorporation or S corporationForm 1120 or 1120-SAlready filed

Form 2553 carries a deadline worth memorizing: 2 months and 15 days from the start of the tax year the election takes effect. Form 8832 sets its own effective date, and the IRS accepts a date up to 75 days before the form is filed. Neither election changes the EIN. The full mechanics live on the LLC tax classification page and on Form 8832 for an LLC.

Does an EIN Keep an LLC Separate From Its Owner?

In practice, yes. State approval of the Articles of Organization creates the legal separation. The EIN makes that separation visible in the records a court, a bank and the IRS actually read.

Separation is proved by documents, and 4 of them all carry the EIN: the bank statements, the filed federal return, the signed Form W-9, and any 1099 issued to the LLC. An LLC that runs its money through a personal account produces none of that evidence. The EIN does not create limited liability, and selling it as legal protection is a claim we will not make. It is the number that lets an owner keep 2 sets of records instead of 1.

The Articles create the shield. Limited liability comes from state law at approval, in any of the 50 states. No IRS form grants it.

The EIN produces the evidence. 4 record types carry it: bank statements, the federal return, Form W-9, and 1099 forms issued to the LLC.

1 account, 1 number, 1 story. Money that never touches a personal account is the strongest answer to a commingling argument.

Separation is a bookkeeping fact before it is a legal one. The EIN gives the LLC its own bank account, its own W-9 identity and its own filing history, so revenue lands on the entity rather than on the owner’s personal record. That trail is what an accountant, a lender or a buyer reads later.

The EIN does not create the liability shield on its own. State law creates it when the Articles of Organization are filed, and owner behaviour sustains it: separate money, filed annual reports, and contracts signed in the LLC’s name. The EIN is what makes the first of those 3 possible.

What Does an EIN Do for a Foreign-Owned LLC?

An EIN makes the mandatory annual filing possible. A foreign-owned single-member LLC files Form 5472 with a pro-forma Form 1120 every year, under its EIN. Missing that filing carries a $25,000 penalty.

For an owner with no SSN, the benefits above stack on top of an obligation. The obligation arrives in year 1, with $0 of income and $0 of activity, under Internal Revenue Code section 6038A. The return has to be filed under a number the IRS recognizes, which is the EIN. That turns the EIN from a convenience into the single piece of infrastructure the whole company sits on.

Form SS-4 line 7b takes the entry Foreign, so no SSN and no ITIN are required, and no passport upload is requested at any point. The paper application travels to 855-641-6935 for an LLC with a US state address and 855-215-1627 for everything else. The IRS international line is 267-941-1099. We file for owners in 150+ countries, for LLCs formed in any of the 50 states.

For a foreign owner the EIN is not an optimisation, it is the entry ticket. A non-US founder has no SSN to file the LLC’s returns under and no SSN to open a US bank account with, so the entity number is the only identifier available. That makes it the first step rather than a later one.

Obtaining it requires no US tax identification of any kind. Form SS-4 line 7b accepts the entry Foreign, the application goes by fax to 855-215-1627, and the EIN returns in 4 to 7 business days. No passport upload is requested at any stage, because the IRS asks for none.

What Do the Benefits of an LLC EIN Cost?

Nothing from the IRS. The EIN costs $0 through all 4 channels, and $0 again in year 2 and after, because an EIN never renews. einforllc.co charges $97 for the Articles review, the classification check, and Form SS-4 faxed within 7 business days, or $127 to file within 24 hours with the IRS call included.

Competitor prices verified July 2026. IRS fee confirmed at $0 on every channel. Full breakdown on the LLC EIN cost page.

Read the price column next to the benefits and the arithmetic is simple. Every benefit on this page is available at $0 to an applicant holding a Social Security Number, in 15 minutes, at irs.gov. The $97 buys 3 things a free filing does not include: a second reader on Form SS-4 lines 8a, 8b and 9a, a character-by-character match of line 1 against your Articles, and a filing deadline in writing. Filed by fax within 7 business days, or that fee is refunded. The $127 Fast tier replaces that deadline with a harder one: filed and the IRS call made within 24 hours, guaranteed, or that fee is refunded. Business days mean Monday to Friday, excluding US federal holidays. The EIN carries its own price and is never bundled, and formation is a separate optional line for owners who have not filed with a state yet. Ready now? get started.

What Does an EIN Not Do for an LLC?

An EIN grants no work authorization, no immigration status, no state tax registration, and no lower tax rate. It identifies the LLC to the IRS. Those 4 limits are worth knowing before you file.

ClaimTrueWhat actually applies
An EIN lowers the LLC tax rateNoRates follow classification set on lines 8a, 8b and 9a
An EIN creates limited liabilityNoState approval of the Articles of Organization does
An EIN registers state sales taxNoEach state issues its own separate number
An EIN gives a visa or work permitNoIt is a tax identifier and nothing else
An EIN replaces the annual returnNoForms 1065, 1120 and 5472 remain due
An EIN expires and needs renewingNoIt lasts the lifetime of the LLC at $0 a year

One more limit sits at the recovery end. The IRS issues 1 CP-575 per EIN and never reprints it, so the benefits pause the moment an owner cannot produce the document a bank asks for. The replacement is a 147C letter at $0. Read lost llc ein number for the recovery route, or LLC EIN number lookup for the 5 places the number already appears.

What Else Do LLC Owners Ask About EIN Benefits?

These 10 questions cover banking, the SSN on Form W-9, business credit, the 2 election forms, the $25,000 Form 5472 penalty, the $0 IRS fee, and what happens when the CP-575 letter goes missing.

+What is the biggest benefit of an EIN for an LLC?

Banking. No US bank or fintech opens an account for an LLC without the 9-digit EIN and the CP-575 letter that carries it. Every other benefit on this page, from business credit to payroll on Forms 941 and 940, runs through that account. The IRS charges $0 for the number.

EIN for an LLC Bank Account
+Does an EIN keep my Social Security Number private?

Yes, on paperwork. A single-member LLC without an EIN writes the owner’s SSN on line 5 of every Form W-9 it hands to a client. With an EIN, that box carries a 9-digit business number instead. One EIN replaces the SSN on an unlimited number of W-9 forms.

EIN for a Single-Member LLC
+Can an LLC build business credit with an EIN?

Yes. Business credit bureaus file trade lines under the LLC name and its EIN, separately from the owner’s personal file. The EIN is the key that opens that file. Suppliers, net-30 vendors, and card issuers report to the EIN, and the LLC keeps that number for its full lifetime.

LLC CP-575 Letter
+Do I get a tax benefit from having an EIN?

The EIN unlocks 2 elections. Form 8832 changes an LLC to corporate treatment, and Form 2553 elects S corporation treatment within 2 months and 15 days of the start of the tax year. Both forms require the EIN. The number itself changes no rate.

Form 8832 for an LLC
+Does an EIN protect my personal liability?

No, on its own. State law creates limited liability when the Articles of Organization are approved. The EIN supports it in practice, because a separate bank account under a separate 9-digit number is what keeps LLC money from mixing with personal money across 12 months of statements.

Does My LLC Need an EIN
+What does an EIN do for a foreign-owned LLC?

It makes the required annual filing possible. A foreign-owned single-member LLC files Form 5472 with a pro-forma Form 1120 every year, and the penalty for missing it is $25,000 under Internal Revenue Code section 6038A. That return is filed under the EIN, and Form SS-4 line 7b takes the entry Foreign.

Form 5472
+How much do these EIN benefits cost?

The IRS charges $0 through all 4 channels: online, fax, mail, and the international line at 267-941-1099. einforllc.co runs $97 Standard (16-19 business days) for the Articles review, the check on lines 8a, 8b and 9a, and the fax within 7 business days. Fast is $127 in 6 to 8 business days with the IRS call included. Year 2 costs $0.

LLC EIN Cost
+Do the benefits expire or need renewing?

No. An EIN never expires and never renews, so year 2 and every year after costs $0. The IRS assigns the 9-digit number for the lifetime of the LLC and never reissues it to a different entity. A name change and a move to a new state both keep the same number.

LLC Name Change and EIN
+Does a single-member LLC get any benefit from an EIN?

Yes, 4 of them: a business bank account, an SSN kept off every W-9, a Stripe or PayPal business account, and payroll readiness on Forms 941 and 940. The IRS treats the LLC as a disregarded entity either way, so the benefits are practical rather than a change in tax rate.

Does a Single-Member LLC Need an EIN
+What happens to these benefits if I lose the number?

They pause until you recover it. The IRS issues one CP-575 letter per EIN and never reprints it. A replacement arrives as a 147C letter at $0, requested from the Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
