EIN for an LLC Bank Account (2026)

The 3 documents a bank verifies, in the order it verifies them

An LLC bank account opens on the LLC’s own 9-digit EIN, never on a personal Social Security Number. The bank verifies 3 documents: the Articles of Organization, the IRS CP-575 letter, and ID for the responsible party. The IRS charges $0 for the EIN.

A bank onboarding checklist for an LLC account showing the three documents verified in order: the state Articles of Organization, the IRS CP-575 letter with the 9-digit EIN, and identification for the responsible party

Do You Need an EIN for an LLC Bank Account?

Yes. Every US bank and fintech that opens LLC accounts requires the LLC’s own 9-digit EIN, because the account is titled to the company. The IRS issues that EIN through Form SS-4 at $0.

The account belongs to the company

A business account carries the LLC name on the signature card, so the bank needs the tax ID that the IRS attached to that name. A Social Security Number identifies a person, not an LLC.

LLC EIN Benefits
The CP-575 is the proof, not the number

Typing 9 digits into a form proves nothing. Banks ask for the IRS letter itself, because it prints the EIN and the legal name side by side on 1 government document.

LLC CP-575 Letter
One human being is on file

Form SS-4 line 7a names 1 responsible party, and the bank expects that same individual on the account. Naming a company on line 7a triggers an IRS rejection before the bank stage.

LLC EIN Application
It keeps your SSN off the paperwork

Without an EIN, a single-member LLC hands its owner's Social Security Number to every client on Form W-9. The EIN replaces those 9 digits on all of them.

Have an SSN? Go to irs.gov. The online assistant is free, it issues the EIN in 15 minutes, and it produces the confirmation letter as a PDF in the same session. You can be at the bank the same afternoon. Paying anyone $97 for that is money wasted.

No SSN? The online tool stops at the validation screen. Take the fax route on your own at $0, using 855-641-6935 or 855-215-1627, or we file it for $97, faxed by us within 7 business days, or $127 filed within 24 hours with the IRS call included.

The EIN is priced on its own. If your LLC already exists, that is the whole invoice, and we will tell you to skip the formation add-on rather than sell it to you. We open no bank account on your behalf, because no bank lets anyone do that.

What 3 Documents Does a Bank Verify for an LLC Account?

A bank verifies 3 documents: the state-approved Articles of Organization, the IRS CP-575 letter carrying the EIN, and government photo ID for the responsible party. All 3 name the same LLC and the same person.

Each document answers a different question, and no document answers two. The Articles prove the LLC exists in law. The CP-575 proves the IRS attached a tax account to that exact name. The ID proves a real human being stands behind both. A bank that accepts 2 of the 3 has an incomplete file, so it asks for the third before releasing the account number.

In What Order Does a Bank Check an LLC’s Documents?

State first, IRS second, person third. The Articles of Organization set the legal name, the CP-575 is matched against that name character for character, and the ID is matched against Form SS-4 line 7a.

The order matters because every later check inherits the name from the earlier one. This is the single mechanism this page teaches: the LLC’s legal name travels from the state record onto the IRS letter onto the bank signature card, and each hop is an exact-string comparison. Break the chain at hop 1 and hop 3 is unreachable.

Step 1: The state record establishes the name

The bank pulls the LLC from the state registry using the filing number on the Articles. Every step after this one waits on that record. An LLC that is filed but not yet approved does not appear in the registry at all, so hop 2 and hop 3 cannot start.

Step 2: The CP-575 is matched to that name

The letter prints the 9-digit EIN and the legal name on the same page, which is why banks ask for the document instead of the number. LLC against L.L.C., a dropped comma, or a truncated name each read as a mismatch to an exact-string check.

Step 3: The ID is matched to Form SS-4 line 7a

Line 7a carries 1 responsible party, and it must be a human being rather than a company. The bank compares the ID it holds to the person the IRS has on file. A parent LLC or a formation agent on line 7a breaks this comparison permanently.

Step 4: Beneficial owners at 25 percent are collected

Under 31 CFR 1010.230, the bank collects identification for each individual owning 25 percent or more of the LLC, plus 1 control person. A single-member LLC produces 1 name at both prongs. A 4-member LLC at 25 percent each produces 4.

The full application route, field by field, sits on the LLC EIN application page, and the master walkthrough is how to get an EIN for an LLC.

What Does Each Bank Ask an LLC For?

Every institution asks for the same 3 documents. They differ on 2 points only: whether a US address is required for the responsible party, and whether the application finishes online or inside a branch.

InstitutionEIN requiredCP-575 or 147CApplication
MercuryYesRequestedOnline
Wise BusinessYesRequestedOnline
RelayYesRequestedOnline
PayoneerYesRequestedOnline
ChaseYesRequestedIn branch
Bank of AmericaYesRequestedIn branch

Requirements read from each institution’s public business-account documentation, July 2026. We introduce no bank, receive no referral fee, and sell 1 product only.

Payment processors run the same file. Stripe, PayPal Business, and Amazon Seller each collect the EIN and match it against IRS records before releasing payouts, so a mismatch that stops a bank stops a payout too. One correct CP-575 clears all of them at once.

Every bank on the list asks for the same 4 items: the 9-digit EIN, the IRS letter carrying it, the state-stamped Articles of Organization, and identification for each owner holding more than 25%. The EIN on its own opens 0 accounts, because the letter is what evidences the pairing of number and name.

Where the banks differ is the residency question rather than the paperwork. Mercury, Wise and Relay onboard foreign-owned LLCs without a US address or a US visit. Chase and Bank of America expect a branch visit, which is the practical reason non-US founders start with the first 3.

Can You Open an LLC Bank Account With an SSN Instead of an EIN?

No. A Social Security Number opens a personal account or a sole proprietor account. An LLC account is titled to the company, so the bank requires the 9-digit EIN the IRS assigned to the LLC itself.

The IRS permits a single-member LLC with no employees to report on the owner’s Social Security Number for federal income tax. Banks do not follow that rule, because their obligation runs to the account holder’s identity rather than to the tax return. This is why the answer to “does the IRS require an EIN” and “does the bank require an EIN” differ for the same LLC on the same day.

Source: IRS classification rules under Form SS-4 lines 8a, 8b and 9a, July 2026.

Line 8b decides the row you land on, and it follows the LLC into every future tax year. A foreign-owned single-member LLC files Form 5472 with a pro-forma Form 1120 annually even with $0 of income, and missing it costs $25,000 per year under Internal Revenue Code section 6038A. The bank account and that filing sit on the same 9 digits. See LLC tax classification and Form 5472.

Why Do Banks Reject LLC Account Applications?

4 causes account for most rejections: a name mismatch between the Articles and the CP-575, an unapproved LLC, a responsible party who is not the person on Form SS-4 line 7a, and a missing IRS letter.

The name differs by 1 character. LLC against L.L.C., a comma before LLC, an ampersand against the word and. The IRS prints what Form SS-4 supplied, and the bank compares strings rather than meaning.

The state has not approved the LLC yet. Form SS-4 requires the approved legal name and the formation date on line 11. An EIN issued against an unapproved name produces a CP-575 that no registry confirms.

A company sits on line 7a. The IRS requires 1 human being as responsible party. A parent LLC or an agent on line 7a leaves the bank with no individual to identify under 31 CFR 1010.230.

The CP-575 is gone and no 147C was requested. The IRS prints 1 CP-575 per EIN and reprints it never. Applications that offer 9 typed digits with no letter behind them stall until a 147C arrives.

The fix is upstream, not at the bank. A name error on a CP-575 is corrected through the IRS, not the branch, and the correction runs on IRS mail time. That is why the $97 includes a character-by-character review of the Articles before Form SS-4 goes out, and the $127 Fast tier includes the same review: 1 proofread at the start replaces weeks of correspondence later.

Can You Open a US LLC Bank Account Without an SSN?

Yes. The LLC needs its own EIN, and Form SS-4 line 7b accepts the entry Foreign, so no SSN and no ITIN is required. The signed form goes by fax to 855-641-6935 or 855-215-1627.

The IRS online assistant validates line 7b against SSN and ITIN records, which stops applicants holding neither at that screen. The paper route carries no such check. Line 7a takes the responsible party’s legal name, line 7b takes the word Foreign, and the IRS assigns the number on the same evidence it uses for every other LLC. No passport upload is requested at any point in the IRS process.

Source: Instructions for Form SS-4 (Rev. December 2023), “How To Apply for an EIN” and “Where To File or Fax,” irs.gov, verified July 2026. The instructions state a fax applicant who supplies a return fax number receives the EIN within 4 business days, a mail applicant within 4 weeks, and an international applicant calling 267-941-1099 receives the EIN during the call. The einforllc.co written guarantee is the filing, not the delivery: Standard is filed by fax within 7 business days, or that fee is refunded, and Fast is filed and the IRS call made within 24 hours, guaranteed, or that fee is refunded.

The online assistant runs Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern, and times out after 15 minutes of inactivity. The 4 business days on the fax route starts when the IRS receives a complete SS-4, not when the fax is sent, and the paper routes carry no tracking number and no status page. A fax sent without a return fax number on it converts the 4-business-day route into the 4-week mail route. Advertised same-day EINs describe the online tool only; the honest version is on how fast can an llc get an ein.

Will a Bank Accept a 147C Letter Instead of the CP-575?

Yes. The IRS prints 1 CP-575 per EIN and never reprints it, so the 147C is the official replacement. Request it at 267-941-1099 internationally or 800-829-4933 inside the United States.

The 147C confirms the same 2 fields the bank cares about: the 9-digit EIN and the legal name the IRS has on record. It reaches the caller by fax on the same call or by mail afterwards. The domestic Business and Specialty Tax Line runs Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, and releases the number only to a person authorized to receive it.

Does Changing Banks Mean a New EIN for the LLC?

No. Switching banks, opening a second account, or moving the LLC to another state keeps the same 9-digit EIN for the life of the company, at $0. Only a structure change forces a new number.

Adding a member converts a disregarded entity into a partnership that files Form 1065, which is why the IRS treats it as a new entity while a name change is a clerical update. What Else Do Owners Ask About an EIN for an LLC Bank Account?

These 10 questions. An LLC bank account opens on the LLC’s own 9-digit EIN and 3 verified documents, the IRS charges $0 for the number, and einforllc.co faxes Form SS-4 within 7 business days for $97, or files it within 24 hours for $127 with the IRS call included.

+Can I open a business bank account without an EIN?

Not for an LLC. Every US bank and fintech that opens LLC accounts asks for the 9-digit EIN on the application form, because the account is titled to the company rather than to a person. A sole proprietor opens an account on a Social Security Number. An LLC does not.

LLC EIN Benefits
+Which 3 documents does a bank verify for an LLC account?

The state-approved Articles of Organization, the IRS CP-575 letter carrying the EIN, and government ID for the responsible party. Banks check them in that order, because the Articles establish the legal name that the other 2 documents are matched against, character for character.

LLC CP-575 Letter
+Does the name on the EIN have to match the LLC bank account?

Yes, exactly. Banks compare 2 name fields: the name on the Articles of Organization and the name printed on the CP-575. A single character of difference, including LLC against L.L.C. or a missing comma, stops the application at the verification stage.

LLC Name Change and EIN
+Can a non-resident open a US LLC bank account without an SSN?

Yes. The LLC needs its own EIN, and Form SS-4 line 7b accepts the entry Foreign, so no SSN and no ITIN is required to obtain it. Banks verify the LLC on its EIN and the responsible party on a passport already in hand. No passport upload happens at the IRS stage.

Lost LLC EIN
+Does a multi-member LLC need a different bank setup?

The documents are the same 3, with 1 addition: banks collect identification for each member who holds 25 percent or more of the LLC, under the FinCEN customer due diligence rule at 31 CFR 1010.230. A multi-member LLC also files Form 1065 every year on the same EIN.

EIN for a Multi-Member LLC
+Does a married couple's LLC need its own EIN for a bank account?

Yes. The account is titled to the company, so it opens on the LLC's own 9-digit EIN rather than either spouse's Social Security Number. Whether the IRS treats that LLC as a partnership filing Form 1065 or as 2 disregarded entities depends on the state's property law.

husband and wife llc ein
+Does changing the LLC bank account require a new EIN?

No. Switching banks, adding a second account, or moving the LLC to another state keeps the same EIN for the life of the company, at $0. A new EIN is required when the structure changes, such as a single-member LLC adding a member and becoming a partnership.
